A residual material as a valuable raw material

Recycled scrap is an ecologically valuable material with which we conserve resources, save a lot of CO2e emissions and close cycles.

Stahlwerk Thüringen is committed to driving forward the transition to a lower-emission and therefore even more sustainable steel industry. We use recycled scrap as a raw material for steel production, which is melted down in an electric arc furnace using 100% electricity from renewable energy sources and with the addition of alloying elements and slag formers.
By using this material, we are making a significant contribution to decreasing our carbon footprint and reducing our dependence on fossil resources such as ore and coke. Every tonne of scrap that we recycle in steel production avoids the emission of around 1.7 tonnes of CO2 and eliminates the need to extract 1.4 tonnes of iron ore compared to traditional production in the blast furnace process. Every year, we melt down almost one million tonnes of the recycled material, which is the equivalent of two Eiffel Towers per week.

Our company relies on short transport routes: we obtain our scrap from a relatively small radius of just 300 kilometres. Most of it can therefore be delivered by the most climate-friendly means of transport of all, by rail.

Steel recycling is applied environmental protection. By recovering and processing steel scrap, the industry makes a significant contribution to conserving resources and protecting the climate. The recycled raw material can be melted down again and again without any loss of quality and rolled into new steel profiles. This emphasises the importance of the circular economy for the future of our planet.

Steel that carries our future.
