BIOCHAR INSTEAD OF INJECTION COAL

Regenerative instead of fossil: in cooperation with the Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences, we are developing climate-friendly coal for the smelting process.

Another project to reduce our CO2 emissions is taking shape: by gradually using biochar to replace fossil injection coal, we will in future balance the CO2 emissions produced in the electric arc furnace.

We are a project partner of Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences for the research project “ThlWertBioMobil” investigating suitable by-products from forestry for a pyrolysis process. . The first stage of the study was successfully completed and pyrolysis coals with a carbon content of > 85 % were produced. Currently, the implementation of a technical trial in our EAF is being examined under consideration of the economic boundary conditions.

We are taking the path to green steel production: by 2040, we want to produce steel in a climate-neutral way and be a CO2-neutral company.
