Connection to hydrogen network

We want to be connected to a supra-regional network by the end of 2027.

We are committed to reducing emissions and are taking big steps towards climate neutrality. We have laid the foundations for another milestone: together with the company Ferngas, we have signed a letter of intent to provide a local extraction facility and to connect to a future pipeline system that transports hydrogen. The next specific steps for planning and technical connection will be worked out in the near future and the corresponding contracts shall be prepared. The investment sum will be in the nine-figure range.

“We want to take the next step towards the sustainable development of the steel industry,” says Alexander Stolze, authorised signatory of Stahlwerk Thüringen GmbH and Head of Purchasing/Warehouse Management. “The connection to the hydrogen network underlines our leading role in the use of more environmentally friendly technologies and at the same time maintains our competitiveness.”

Our reheating furnace in the rolling mill shall be operated 100% with emission-free hydrogen in future. To this end, we will gradually convert and modernise the burner technology. We are also planning to use hydrogen in the electric steelworks in future, for example in the ladle and tundish management units and in the flame cutting processes.

We are confident that by the end of 2027, the political framework conditions will also be regulated to such an extent that hydrogen will be available in the required quantities.
