Recycled substitute with a smaller CO2 backpack

We are replacing quicklime with a more climate-friendly input material.

Burnt dolomite is used as an additive during the melting process. In particular, it reduces the burn-off of the refractory lining in the electric arc furnace. Among other things, this refractory lining can be reutilised through recycling and fed into a new life cycle as recycled dolime feedstock. Following successful trials with the recyclate MgO64, we have been using it to melt down scrap since the beginning of 2025.

The material offers the possibility of almost completely eliminating upstream emissions from the production of dolime. By using the substitute MgO64, approx. 4 kg of CO2 can be saved per tonne of moulded steel (within Scope 3 of the Green House Gas Protocol). Extrapolated to our annual production, this corresponds to 3,000 tonnes of CO2.
