Steel that carries rails sustainably.

What do steel sleepers have to do with climate protection? Quite a lot. They are among the most durable and low-maintenance constructions in modern track construction: their potential lying time of 50 to 70 years is significantly longer than that of concrete sleepers. Compared to wooden sleepers, steel sleepers have the advantage that they do not need to be impregnated with environmentally harmful agents. And last but not least, steel sleepers do not generate any waste at the end of their long service life, as they can be 100% recycled. Thus, it’s no wonder that they are used wherever ecology and sustainability are a high priority. Together with our partner EFSA, we supply the Swiss railway network in many places, here in the example of the Appenzeller Bahnen:

The ecological commitment of Appenzeller Bahnen in the Swiss Lake Constance region goes beyond its range of services. They support the reduction of the carbon footprint with targeted projects in the area of environmental promotion. The trains on the Appenzeller Bahnen rail network run on green electricity from the Zervreila hydroelectric power plant in the upper Vals Valley and the areas along the route network have been sustainably upgraded in recent years. With a rail network of 94.8 kilometres, they are the fourth-largest metre-gauge railway in Switzerland. Its 6 railway lines run through 4 cantons and transport 6.3 million people a year through the Appenzellerland and the Murg Valley.

Stahlwerk Thüringen prioritises rail transport for both environmental and economic reasons. We support railway companies that, like us, pursue a consistently sustainable business policy with decarbonisation: SWT supplies Europe’s railway infrastructure projects with the low-emission product line SWT Stahlwerk Thüringen Green Steel.
