The LEGO Group is an internationally successful company and at the same time a pioneer when it comes to environmentally conscious production: every factory is designed for sustainability… from solar cells on the roof to electric vehicles for internal transport. LEGO has production facilities on three continents. This reduces transport distances and thus the ecological footprint of the products. Stahlwerk Thüringen supports companies that want to build with low emissions with the product line SWT Green Steel. We supplied the LEGO Group with 270 tonnes of our CO2-reduced steel in the form of HE and IPE beams in steel grade S355J2+M.
Half of this will be used for the expansion of the Mexican factory in Monterrey. It is one of the largest plastic mould production plants in Latin America and supplies North and South America with Lego bricks and toys. LEGO has continuously expanded its operations in Monterrey over the last ten years. There are plans to expand the plant to over 48,000 square metres. As with all other sites, the LEGO Group also takes various environmental aspects into account here and, for example, collects rainwater in large tanks to reuse it for the factory’s cooling system.
The other half of our SWT Green Steel is being used for the construction of a new factory in Vietnam. It will be the first climate-neutral LEGO factory: rooftop solar panels and a nearby solar park will generate enough renewable energy to fully cover the annual demand.
The new factory has been designed in such a way that the production facilities will be particularly energy efficient. A minimum standard of LEED Gold is being targeted for the construction of the state-of-the-art factory, covering all areas of sustainability, including energy, water and waste.
The LEGO Group was founded in 1932 in Billund, Denmark. Its mission is to inspire and nurture the builders of tomorrow through the creative power of play: high quality and as sustainable as possible. The name LEGO is derived from the two Danish words Leg Godt, which means ‘play well’. Even today, the LEGO Group is still a family business with its headquarters in Billund, Denmark. Its products are now sold in more than 130 countries worldwide.
Steel that supports creative constructions.
