SWT Green Efficiency

We continually reduce resource usage and step-by-step achieve improved efficiency of processes.

By realizing the measures concerning energy efficiency including the furnaces, more than 200 million kWh have been saved already.

SWT Green Processes

We continually improve our energy efficiency according to DIN EN ISO 50001 in all business processes. This reduces CO2 emissions and saves precious resources.

Our principles:

By modernising and technically optimising our burner technologies at our electric arc furnace, we achieved a reduction contribution of more than 1,200 tonnes of CO2 per year.

In 2024, we modernised our dedusting system on a large scale: new motors, transformers, fan wheels for the dedusting fans, the associated control and electrical technology as well as water-cooled frequency converters that adjust the speed of the fan motors to current requirements. The savings potential of this measure is around 11 gigawatt hours of energy per year.

Since the beginning of 2025, we have been using the recycled material MgO64 as an additive when melting scrap. This material makes it possible to almost completely eliminate upstream emissions from the production of dolomitic lime.

In 2025, the energy-efficiency refurbishments of the administration building, the MRG hall and the MI1 workshop were completed. In addition, the newly constructed service building at the connecting railway line was ready for occupation. The new photovoltaic system on the warehouses generated 128 MWh in 2025. The energy savings from the refurbished buildings and halls amounted to 365 MWh of natural gas and 791 MWh of heat in 2025.

We have developed a comprehensive modernisation programme to decarbonise the reheating process in the rolling mill and make it more efficient.

Optimization of the circular
economy

We reprocess our metallurgical by-products for subsequent utilization paths. We close global material cycles in the long run, thus making our contribution to reduce global consumption of natural resources. Currently, our electric arc furnace slag, is mainly used in road and industrial area construction and further areas of application are being explored. Separation iron obtained from slag, are crushed and fed into the steel production process. Mill scale is used as iron oxide carrier in the cement and automobile industries. From our filter dust, zinc is recovered by our partner companies. The worn-out brickwork of our stoves is recycled at the end of its useful life and made into new bricks.

Optimization green space management

Handelsblatt calculated that a single tree (beech or maple, e.g.) binds about 1.5-2.5 tonnes of CO2 throughout its life. We plant shrubs and trees on the company premises. Since 2020, 200 shrubs have been planted around the scrap yard. We also plant trees outside the company together with regional cooperation partners. In 2026, for example, we planted over 2,000 seedlings. These larch, oak and cherry trees will sequester around 4,000 tonnes of CO₂ over the course of their lifetimes.
