Green Steel FAQ

What is green steel?

Green Steel means steel which is particularly resource-saving in the process of production/logistics, especially regarding the use of fossil energies and CO2 emissions. By increasingly using renewable energies and reducing CO2 emissions, SWT Green Steel will get “greener” gradually.

HOW DO YOU MEASURE THE GRADE OF GREENNESS?

There are different international evaluation methods. Currently, we use two methods:

IS BUILDING WITH STEEL GENERALLY “GREENER” THAN BUILDING WITH OTHER MATERIALS, SUCH AS CONCRETE?

Yes, it is. Each tonne of steel contains unlimited potential: the material can be completely recycled again and again without losing its material quality. Compared to building with concrete, building with steel has also the advantage that a lot less trucks are needed to get the material to the building site.

HOW MUCH CO2 SAVING IS ACHIEVED DURING THE PRODUCTION OF SWT GREEN STEEL?

Currently, we achieve emissions of 327 kg CO2e / tonne section steel. Thereby we save about 418 kg CO2/t compared to conventional section steel production via the EAF route and about 1,600 – 1,900 Kg CO2/t in comparison to the blast furnace route.

PER TONNE OF SECTION STEEL

1000 kg CO2e
Sample Calculation: Bauforumstahl calculated savings of 15kg CO2 emission per square meter building area. Thereby building a warehouse of 12,000 m2 with SWT Green Steel saves 175,260 kg CO2.

HOW CAN SWT GREEN STEEL BE IDENTIFIED?

Customers who order SWT Green Steel receive an extended sales order confirmation. After delivery they receive a mill test certificate including data about CO2 balance and a link to our Green Steel web application. Our customers can choose if they only want to see the carbon footprint of production or additionally the emissions of the logistic process according to the incoterm – up to the warehouse destination of the customer.
